Ettore Sottsass Austria/Italy
1917: Born in Innsbruck, Austria
1935-1939: Studies architecture at the Turin Polytechnic
up to 1949: Active in the areas of painting and sculpture
1950-1955: Fourteen architectural projects focusing on rebuilding destroyed North Italian cities
1956: Works together with George Nelson in New York
1958-1992: Chief consultant for product design at Olivetti; helps design the first electronic calculator "Elea 9003"
1959: Receives the "Compasso d'oro" award for "Elea 9003"
1960: Sets up his own office in Milan
1964/1965: Designs the typewriter "Valentine" for Olivetti
1966/1967: Designs furniture for Poltronova
1969: Wins the "Delta di oro" award for "Valentine"
1972: Designs for Alessi, participates in the exhibition "Italy, the New Domestic Landscape" at the Museum of Modern Art, New York
1973: Cofounder of the Global Tools group
1976: Establishes Studio Alchimia large retrospective of Sottsass' works in Berlin, Paris, and Sydney
1980: Founds Sottsass Associati
1981: Set up the Memphis group
1985: Quits the Memphis group
1986/1987: Designs the "Teodora" chair for the Vitra Edition at Vitra
1986: Active in the areas of industrial design, interior design and visual communication
1992: Title of Officer of the Order of Arts and Letters of the French Republic
1993: Honory degree from the Rhode Island School of Design in the United States
1994: IF Award Design Kopfe from the Industrie Forum Design in Hanover
1996: Title of Honorary Doctor of the Royal College of Art in London; Award Design form the Brooklyn Museum of New York
1997: Oribe award in Japan and others
